I love to make pallet raised garden beds. These beds provide bottom heat for new seedlings, don't need weeded, make harvesting and planting easy, and serve as a composting bed for even the biggest yard debris...
...You can use any kind of carbon to fill the beds and then you start the heat with some nitrogen. My preference for the starter is rabbit manure tea.
This little book teaches the principles of these beds. Some people don't like the idea of using repurposed materials like pallets so this just teaches you the rules for making the bed work. The next book will show in depth my own specific beds including all of the splinters and warped wood!
I built this greenhouse with pallets and second hand lumber for less than $100. It is working better than my large commercial greenhouse at growing winter vegetables. The growing bed space is the same as my large greenhouse but without all of the unneeded paths. The pallet greenhouse need one fifth the greenhouse plastic and the plastic is under less stress because it is attached to the very solid hotbeds. The cow panels support the plastic in the wind better than my commercial greenhouse does because the small grids keep the plastic from whipping. The cow panels handle heavy snows without strain and I can knock snow down without worrying about puncturing plastic, I just tap the panels themselves and they dump the snow themselves.
