On the penultimate day of the BB20 event, 20 minutes before recording this podcast, Mike was the first person got PEP-1 certified! He arrived at Paul’s with 5-10 BBs about a year and a half ago. Already about a third of the way to PEP-2 and motivated to keep going to collect the badges. About a quarter of the stuff are things he’d do anyway, and the rest are things that he’d not have done if it weren’t for
PEP. Every BB results in some tangible result that’s more than a piece of paper, making PEP certification more substantial than a resume because it shows what you’ve done to earn it – just click on the “PEP-1 certified” badge and be shown all the stuff you’ve done rather than taking someone’s word for it.
At next summer’s
PTJ, there’ll be
SKIP track that’s meant for attendees to get a BB, and another homesteading skills track, which will run in parallel, with less focus on BBs and be more like a traditional
workshop. If somebody shows up with 5 BBs done before the PTJ starts, and then focus on SKIP through the PTJ and SKIP events, there’s a very high probability that they’ll be PEP-1 certified.
Everyone loves the excavator, although seeing as everyone is inexperienced at driving it, it actually slowed down hugelkultur construction somewhat because it wasn’t safe to be near without more
experience driving. With more experience, the time to cover a hugelkultur bed would probably come down from 20 minutes to a minute or two, as well as being much safer.
