Summary
Paul and
Josiah round off their discussion of the construction and design of the berm-shed.
They discuss the development a new type of angle brace known as a kicker, and Fred's construction of a gin pole mounted on a tractor bucket to help them lift logs. They imagine that their dream team of builders would prefer to use manual labour or electric tools over diesel, and discuss the benefits of an electric chainsaw, though acknowledge that their electric tractor wasn't too successful. Paul dreams of electric excavators.
They move on to discuss refinements in the ash, borax and DE mix for use in the post holes, the evolution of the notches in the joinery, and improved lithium batteries which could maybe power a winch. Successive earth ramps were built for the tractor to reach the top of the berm-shed, re-using the earth each time. The importance of wide eaves was again emphasised. Paul wants to source a planer attachment for the tip of a chainsaw which would make cutting joints much easier.
Overall they are happy with the berm-shed and hopeful that the lessons learned will mean that the fifth wofati will only take a month as methods become optimised. The lab is colder and less muddy than base-camp. They discuss snow and note that the failure of the berm-shed took place during summer and was not due to snow load. They conjecture that a new build could take four times as much snow, but that's just wild ass speculation.
