COVER STORY
The design on the front cover of the Designers' Manual is based on the aboriginal story of the egg of life and rainbow snake, which is full of meaning. The whole 600 pages of the book requires that we learn to read between the lines. Alan is currently writing a book,
"Observation for Design" and is learning the art and importance of distilling vast amounts of information. Mollison tackled a near infinite subject and distilled it down to the Big Black Book. Summarising is hard work!
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

PERMACULTURE DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Are people the problem? Either we sit down and die, or we continue to live and become profoundly regenerative. We have to choose which. We could regenerate vast amounts of landscape within a couple of decades if we try. We need to change our narrative. We can do this! We need that zone five to be a reservoir of biodiversity around us and to become mutually symbiotic with it.
The prime directive of permaculture -
"the only ethical decision is to take responsibility for our own existence and that of our children. Make it now." We need to shift from production to consumption. Political war is less effective than reducing consumption, which will solve it. It's both, not either/or. Paul's book aims to show people that quality of life is not income dependent and that we can luxuriate in a high quality, low
footprint life.
