Summary
Paul Wheaton and Ben Lawson finish their discussion about dryland ponds, then switch to overalls, relationships, polyamory and turning Paul into a cartoon.
They discuss de-gunking ponds, siphons, emergency overflow, primary flow, trout habitat, the importance of slowing water down and Paul's
finger-on-the-pond design. They steal ideas from keyline design and note that it is often better to seek forgiveness than ask permission. Paul talks about Erica Wisner's
experience with the department of making you sad. He notes the importance of eliminating the need for complaints, and of giving the correct answers to officials. He likes the way
Sepp Holzer's theme park does not actually
sell produce. A spring terrace requires a slope, but most of the same effect can be created with Paul's humus well design.
Ben wants to know the significance of Paul's overalls, which leads to a discussion about dating,
intentional community, relationships, and the aims of the experiments at
wheaton labs. Paul's podcast about relationships is available for purchase. Ben believes that polyculture goes hand in hand with polyamory. Paul says one at a time is plenty, but Ben encourages him to
lean into the edge, whilst pointing out that heart
gardening is not for the lazy.
This podcast, along with 250 others, is available on Ben's website,
tantrapunk.com, which has much 18+ content, all free. Topics covered in his own podcasts include sexorcism, romance with nature, gender politics and holistic design. He stresses the need for harmonious social permaculture and notes that
Geoff Lawton agrees that human systems are not easy to design. He supports the cryptocurrency movement and sees a need to break free from patriarchal patterns. Ben would like to create a kid-friendly Spongebob-type cartoon based on Paul's verbage as a
gift to humanity and an attempt to parent a new culture.
