Summary

Paul Wheaton continues his discussion with Mike Haasl and Ash Jackson about the Badge Bits for the sand badge in animal care.

When you attempt a BB, it’s better to surpass the listed requirements rather than only just meet them.  Only just passing the requirements can make the people verifying the BBs unsure if it’s a pass or fail, and can result in weeks of waiting.  Make sure you read the BB’s requirements – if you don’t send all the required pictures/videos, you don’t get the BB.  And if one person is allowed to get a BB without meeting all the requirements, everyone gets a BB without them.  Paul wants suggestions on how to improve BBs, but a lot of it will have to wait a year or so to get version 1.0 out.

Difference between hay and straw is timing – hay is cut when green, straw is cut when dry.  Even goats barely eat straw.  Both can have seeds, persistent herbicides, and be used as mulch.  Don’t build with hay – it’ll just rot.

BBs:
Make 1 bale of hay
- scythe and dry green grass
- make at least one bale of hay

Make 1 bale of straw
- scythe or gather dry straw (pine straw works)
- make at least one bale of straw

Create a brush pile near a garden for animal/insect diversity habitat
- at least 5ft tall, 5ft wide

Create 6 toad habitats
- make six different toad habitats

Plant 60 mulberry tree seeds
- plant at least 60 mulberry seeds
- each mulberry seed must be at least 3 feet apart
- accelerate video to last no longer than 2 minutes

Make snake and lizard habitat
- make snake or lizard habitat
- no cardboard or man-made materials involved

Live mouse trap
- make a live rodent trap
- show that it works

Concerning straw: I also don't associate simply completely dry gras with it. In my context, straw is made from cereal grains after the grain is harvested. In this situation the expectation of more herbicides and less seeds in straw makes perfekt sense. You can't buy straw made of a normal field around here, general grases are used for hay, silage or the between stages.

We had a cat named Apollo too!  I loved Apollo, he was the scrawniest and so adorable.  He moved in with a neighbor and he passed away a few years after that.  I miss him.
