Summary
Episode two of the Permaculture Smackdown! Joining Paul this time are Opalyn
Rose, Katie, and Mark. Like the previous Smackdown, this one is a Q&A on a variety of topics.
What
PEP badges going through re-writes, and what are the revisions? The natural medicine badge has had a major upgrade – the sand badge is staying quite similar, and the journal has been eliminated due to focusing on milder herbs as well as being the
root of a bunch of other problems. Furthermore, the
straw,
wood, and iron badges will go in a different direction. The last badge in the nest category will also change, but not certain to what yet.
How could you have a small heard of a variety of animals in a good way, and in regards to intensive rotational grazing, how do you keep plants that the animals don’t like from becoming more prevalent? Most of the things that animals will eat are also the sort of things that like to grow back with even more vigour after being munched on, as long as they’re left to rest after being grazed, so they’ll keep pace with the plants that the herds don’t like.
Can you burn shapes of wood other than long, thin sticks and pieces of log, such as a sphere, in a
Rocket Mass Heater? Yes, but it’s not going to be as efficient as spears, because it will block airflow far more than a bundle of spears. A collection of small balls (or pellets), however, will present more of a problem due to them piling on top and around each other and blocking off much more air. Furthermore, if there isn’t
enough air getting through the pile of pellets, the
RMH might not get hot enough to burn completely, causing ash buildup. Or it might be fine, this needs to be double-checked.
