Summary
Paul Wheaton and Jennifer Richardson continue their discussion of radically different financial strategies, comparing Jacob Lund Fiskar's
Early Retirement Extreme (ERE) to life at
wheaton labs.
Paul responds to comments made on the ERE forum, which are likely influenced by the Fouch video. Paul notes how rumours can spread on the internet and wonders how many people believe that Catherine the Great really did fuck a horse. Sometimes a tiny grain of truth becomes totally twisted, usually by someone who tried to dictate how Paul runs the labs. The Fouch video has proved a good filter for
bootcamp. Is wheaton labs a cult? Does Paul insist that people comply or be kicked out? Jen doesn't tolerate being dictated to.
Wheaton labs is for non smoking weirdos who enjoy experimenting with
gardening, natural building and living with no drama. Jen gives her definition of ERE, though she points out that it's adaptable, more of a map than a set of directions. For her, life at wheaton labs has been a shortcut to
early retirement. She says the benefits of bootcamp are threefold. Firstly, living expenses are drastically reduced as housing and high quality food are included. Secondly, you can build knowledge and skills. Thirdly, the community which provides mutual assistance from a group of like minded folk.
Bootcamp was harder work than Jen expected. It pushed her to to do new things, like welding, which she would otherwise have avoided. Without wheaton labs, she would have to buy land. Wheaton labs allows for expansion as your needs change. The previous ant village program did attract people who only wanted cheap rent rather than ones who choose to be there because they have similar values.
