Summary

Credit: Sally Chang

This podcast is a continuation of the discussion of the NPR program Intelligence2 Debate: Should We Avoid Eating Anything With A Face (see podcast 269 for link).

Paul wonders if vegans and vegetarians are truly aware of the actual facts of how their vegetables are grown–a process that includes lots of tilling which disturbs the soil and kills many creatures. He also questions the vegan charge that in an omnivorous diet animals are "exploited." Erica points out that it is impossible to live without exploiting something. Paul feels that an organic vegan diet actually kills more creatures with faces than a grass-fed omnivorous diet.

There is a discussion concerning Vitamin B12 and the difficulty of getting enough it in a vegetarian diet.

Also, left out of the debate is the discussion of factory farms.

Where do we find a link to the study about tomatoes responding to pain more than fish? I would like to have access to that study!

I loved what Erica had to say in this podcast about how society is uncomfortable dealing with death and how "when you have a plethora of life, you must also have a plethora of death," because otherwise, "you'd be living with zombies." And I liked what Erica also mentioned about how people would rather use synthetic things than deal with the awkwardness of accepting the place of other animals and plants and their relationship to them. I think that really hones in on a major point about how, in a way, society is not yet grown up and matured to the point of accepting where we are meant to go biologically in the circle of life. I also appreciated the talk about how "well, everything is exploitation." But, I would prefer to look it as just relationships and how the relationships can be improved.
